About the Role
Work involves the responsibility for the care of all taxa and the maintenance of sanitary conditions of buildings, grounds and enclosures. Incumbent checks diets and prepared foods prior to distributing them to the animals. Cleans and disinfects buildings, cages and other facilities housing animals; keep drains free, reports needed repairs to supervisor. Report observations on the animals to supervisors and deal with the public as public relations agents while also protecting the public and the animal collections. Special skills, knowledge and abilities: Some knowledge of the care and feeding of mammals, reptiles and/or birds represented in the zoo. Methods and techniques used in general maintenance repair and cleaning of zoo, facilities, occupational hazards involved in the work and the proper safety precautions for the safe performance of the job.
Requirements
Training and Education: High School graduate or equivalent (college degree preferred) and at least 2 years experience in custodial care of animals
PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT, APPLICANT RECOMMENDED FOR EMPLOYMENT SHALL BE REQUIRED TO SUCCESSFULLY PASS A URINALYSIS AND/OR BLOOD TEST TO SCREEN FOR ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUG ABUSE.
